Examinations
There will be two examinations. Both have equal weight.

The first one (referring to operating systems) is an oral and individual examination. The time frame for this exam is 25 minutes (+ 5 minutes for potential clarifications and to give you an indication about your performance). For legal and organizational reasons, the 'on-the-spot' indication is no binding information. The final schedule is published below on this page. There will be two examiners present (Uwe R. Zimmer & Holger Kenn).

Some hints for the oral examinations:
  • Train to talk about the topics and to transfer your knowledge in a structured and compact form.
  • Get to the point of the questions first, then expand with all the things which you know additionally about the addressed topic.
  • You need to be precise in your formulations. If it takes a second to order to thoughts and to answer the question: take your time, perhaps make some notes.
  • You do not need to be overpolite. If you are full of additional or alternative answers: talk and deliver until we stop you.
  • Very often it is helpful to write down some keywords or to sketch a little figure. Sometimes we will even ask you explicitly to draw a specific figure in order to give you the chance to explain your points more precisely.
  • The nature of the questions is:
    • checking the basic understanding of the field (approx. 50%).
    • checking the ability to be critical about the introduced concepts (approx. 30%).
    • checking the ability to handle the introduced concepts in a creative way (approx. 20%).
  • You might convince yourself that the process is nice and fair by asking students, which finished the exam already, i.e. you may exchange all kinds of information about the oral exam process. The questions will be all different though, and such additional information which you might get from other students will not be helpful in a technical sense.
The second (written) examination will be close to the exam style which you know from the previous semester.
